Resident Evils Origin in a NES Game Called Sweet Home

Back when it came out, a friend of mine immediately tipped me. ‘ You have got to play Resident Evil 7!’ It was that good. Well Capcom had too, after they butchered the series with the previous two instalments. Interesting tough, with RE4 being somewhat regarded as the best in the series, and one of the best games to come out in general.

Couple of days ago I came across this article from Kotaku. It’s about a game called Sweet Home for the NES which was only released in Japan. If you are into some background. This is highly recommended reading. As if the background of gamemechanics used in this game. I do wonder how the hell they pulled all this off. Because the graphics look top notch to me.

In fact, Resident Evil began as a remake of Sweet Home before taking on an undead life of its own. But Sweet Home’s significance goes beyond its historical footnote status as precursor to the Biohazard’s that have become synonymous with survival horror. Much of what made the original Resident Evil a classic comes from this 8-bit romp and its almost constant sense of tension and pressure. I would go so far as to say Resident Evil’s recent struggles are rooted in leaving behind the schematics laid out in Sweet Home.
